This quick set-up math center offers kindergarten students practice with subtraction (within 5 and 10). Using printable ten frame cards, this matching activity allows students to build number sense and subtraction skills. Whether they play in a pocket chart, on the carpet, or at their seats, this easy-to-learn center is perfect for building kindergarten math skills!

What’s included in this subtraction ten frame matching pack?

This low-prep kindergarten math activity includes three levels of play with printable cards and recording sheets for each. The cards for each section are included in a black-and-white version at the end of the file.

Here’s what you’ll find inside:

✅ Subtraction Representation
This section includes printable cards with ten frames, subtraction equations, and number bonds. Students can match all three, or you can omit some of the cards to narrow your focus. A recording sheet for this section allows students to practice matching ten frames with equations and number bonds.

✅ Decomposing Ten
This section includes ten frame cards illustrating the ways to make ten for students to match with 10 – __ equations. This gives students exposure to the “friends of ten” and helps them build number sense. Two recording sheets for this section allow students to either record each match they make by drawing and writing an equation or simply fill in the missing numbers to create an equation that matches a ten-frame picture.

✅ Subtraction Fluency Within Five
In this section, students match five-frame representations of subtraction problems within five to corresponding equations. Two recording sheets for this section allow students to either record each match they make by drawing and writing an equation or simply fill in the missing numbers to create an equation that matches a five-frame picture.

How can I use this subtraction ten frame center in my classroom?

To get this center up and running, simply print the sections of your choice on card stock. If you wish to make them more durable, laminate them and then cut them apart.

After you teach the procedure and your expectations, students can use this activity as a center or an early finisher task. You might also wish to use the cards in small groups and then make them available for independent practice in a pocket chart.
