Why include fine motor activities on Apple Day?
If you’ve spent much time at all on this site, I imagine you’ve noticed that I’m pretty passionate about fine motor skills! In fact, they are right up there with thematic teaching at the top of my teaching priority list. ❤️
As our society shifts toward increasing reliance on technology, so many of our kiddos are coming into school with underdeveloped fine motor skills. This shows up in school in lots of ways—from difficulty with writing and drawing to frustration with everyday tasks like opening containers and zipping coats. Beyond this, research shows that strong fine motor skills in the early years of life help form connections in the brain that lead to greater academic achievement throughout the school years.
So, long story short, fine motor skills are important every day, so why not incorporate them into special days like Apple Day, too?!
Are you collaborating with other teachers on your grade level to plan Apple Day? The fine motor activities I’ve included in this post are great for using with your own class, but are simple enough to use with a larger group—perfect for switching classes as part of your apple celebration!

🍏 Four Fun Fine Motor Rotations for Apple Day
Without further ado, here are the activities!
Apple Pattern Block Mat
Build dexterity and spatial reasoning with pattern blocks this Apple Day! For this activity, you will need pattern blocks, dry-erase markers, and a copy of the free printable “Build and Count” mat for each student who will be in a rotation group. If you have write-and-wipe sleeves, those work great for the dry-erase aspect of this activity. If not, you could laminate the mats or use page protectors. Whichever you end up with, provide an eraser for the group members to share!
Printing Note: Print this mat at 100% (or “actual size”) for best results. Shrinking the page will prevent the pattern blocks from fitting perfectly.

To complete this simple task, students match blocks to the pattern block puzzle mat to build an apple. Then, they count each shape to complete the table at the bottom. If you have kids finishing early, encourage them to use pattern blocks to design their own apple-themed pictures (such as an apple tree, an apple pie, or a jar of applesauce).
Apple Bead Craft
This simple Apple Day craft builds dexterity and strengthens the pincer grasp as students string pony beads onto a pipe cleaner. For this station, you’ll need red, yellow, and/or green pony beads (about 30 per student), pipe cleaners, and a leaf cutout. For the leaf, craft foam works well, as does felt. You can also use green cardstock or laminated green paper! Cut the leaves out ahead of time, punching or poking a hole in each one.

To complete this craft, students string about 30 beads onto their pipe cleaner. Once all the beads are there, they add the leaf, then twist the ends of the pipe cleaner together to form a stem. They may need help with the last step—or at least some guidance to remind them to fold the sharp ends over.
Playdough Apple Life Cycle
Using playdough is great for hand strength! This Apple Day activity encourages creativity as students form models of each stage of an apple’s life cycle. You’ll need playdough (store-bought or homemade) and a copy of the free printable playdough mat for each student in the rotation group. Laminate the mats or put them in sleeves to protect them. If you’re rotating lots of kids through this station, I recommend having baby wipes on hand to help prevent the spread of germs!

For this activity, the students make a model of an apple seed, seedling, tree, blossom, and apple. Make sure students start with clean hands—especially if they’ll be sharing playdough. Encourage students to talk quietly as they work, so they get practice using science vocabulary!
Apple Tree Stem Challenge
For this Apple Day challenge, students work to build an apple tree out of simple materials—and then balance pompom apples on top! This is great for practicing motor control and precision as students have to balance craft sticks and pompoms. Here’s what you’ll need: something for a trunk (I used brown paper, rolled up and taped. You could use toilet paper tubes, upside-down paper cups, or blocks instead), green craft sticks, and small red craft pompoms (or mini erasers, which are a little trickier).

There are different ways you can approach this apple tree challenge. You could give each student one trunk, seven craft sticks, and ten pompoms. Their challenge will be to create a tree (by balancing the craft sticks on the trunk) that is sturdy enough to hold all ten of their “apples.” Or, you could provide the students each with the same number of branches, but put all the pompoms in the middle, with the challenge being, “Which tree can hold the most apples?”
