How can I use these ten frame mats in my classroom?

Use these ten frame mats in a variety of ways to help your young students develop a strong number sense. A solid sense of “ten” is a prerequisite to understanding place value (without which higher-level math is impossible). When early childhood students begin to be able to visualize quantities in relation to ten, they are building number sense in ways that help them understand all the other numbers!

Use these ten frame mats as part of your whole- or small-group instruction to have students model numbers using math manipulatives. Begin with simple activities, such as having students count out manipulatives to match a number you display on a flashcard. Throughout the year, students can advance to ten frame activities that help them understand two-digit numbers as well as addition and subtraction.
