Simple tasks are best for giving students independent practice with CVC words. The two included CVC words center tasks allow students to put sounds together and take them apart to read and spell CVC words. Use magnetic letters, letter tiles, or dry erase markers for the spelling (encoding) center and the included picture cards for the reading (decoding) center.
What’s included in this CVC words center set?
This set includes two printable center activities, picture/work keys, and visual instructions pages. All materials are included in black and white in addition to the color versions.
✅ CVC Words Spelling Center
This activity includes 60 center cards (12 for each medial vowel). Each card includes a simple picture and a space for the student to spell the word using magnetic letters, a dry erase marker, or other letter manpulatives.
✅ CVC Words Reading Center
This activity includes 60 word cards and 60 matching picture cards (12 for each medial vowel). Students read the word and then find the picture that matches.
✅ CVC Center Visual Instructions
These cards include an “I can” statement along with pictures and words explaining the procedure. Two versions of the instructions for each activity are included. The second one includes a final instruction for students to write the word (after spelling it or matching it). This step can be completed in a notebook, on a dry erase board, or on a sheet of paper.
✅ Picture/Answer Keys
These can be used to clarify any uncertain words or to give the students a self-check option as they work independently.
How can I use this CVC words center in the classroom?
To prepare the center, print the cards on cardstock and laminate them for durability. Provide magnetic letters, letter tiles, or dry erase markers and erasers for the spelling center.
Model these centers for students prior to placing them at a center. Consider providing students with only a portion of the cards at a time (just one or two vowels, for example).
