Class Books – Writing Prompts

Description

In early childhood classrooms, it is so important to give children many opportunities to engage with print in authentic and purposeful ways. Working together to make books for the classroom library does just that, while also contributing to a sense of community in the classroom. Children love and take such pride in reading books that they and their classmates have created! This Class Books set includes templates and cover pages to put together 15 different class-made books.

What’s included in this class books set?

Most of the book templates in this set include multiple options. Choose the page that will work best for your students. I have also included a simple page with room for a sentence and a picture that can be used with any of the books if you want something open-ended.

The last four books in this set are intended to be class photo books. These books will feature the students in your class and will be some of the most popular choices in your classroom library!

How to Use This Class Books Set

This class books set is designed to allow your group to work together to create books for your classroom library that have one page to represent each of your students. Children really enjoy reading the writing of their friends and seeing their own hard work preserved in book form!

As a writing activity, have students complete the book page that you have chosen to copy (there are options for most of the books). Beginning with a mini-lesson and a brainstorming session will get your students on track. Consider incorporating your phonics lesson into the brainstorming session and creating a chart that your students can use as a resource while they work. Encourage students to spend time adding details and labels to their pictures!

There are many options for binding your class books. If you have access to a comb binder, that is a simple and durable way to keep your book together. Otherwise, using a hole punch and ribbon, string, or binder rings works well. I recommend laminating the front and back cover to make your book sturdier. I have included a “The End” page to print on colorful card stock for the back cover. Children love reading, “The End!”

The four books at the end of this pack are designed to be photo books. When making class photo books, another option is to use a thin three-ring binder with a clear pocket on the front. You can slide each page into a plastic page protector. This really helps the book stand up to frequent use in your classroom library!
