All About Groundhog Day Videos
Choose from this first collection of Groundhog Day videos to provide your students with background knowledge about groundhogs (also known as woodchucks) and their special day. These videos are perfect for touching on social studies concepts about holidays and traditions, as well as “then and now.”
From Homeschool Pop, this “Groundhog Day for Kids” video uses video, photos, and animation to teach about groundhogs and Groundhog Day traditions over time. This video will give your students a good foundation for understanding the holiday.
“All About Groundhog Day” from Maggie Bell Teaching also touches on all the important Groundhog Day facts: shadows, groundhog facts, holiday traditions, and history. The narrator also introduces us to a few different groundhogs that predict the weather in various U.S. states (beyond Punxsutawney Phil).
This “Groundhogs for Kids” video from Socratica Kids starts by teaching kids lots of interesting nicknames for groundhogs. Though this video does include a section about Groundhog Day, it also includes many interesting facts about the animal itself. I like that this video builds on some of the basic understandings your students will have from watching one of the previous videos. It’s a fun one!
SciShow Kids has also weighed in on Groundhog Day with “Fun Facts About Groundhogs.” This fast-paced video packs a lot of interesting information into just under four minutes—perfect for a transition time or a mini-lesson before a fictional groundhog read-aloud.
In “Meet the Animals: Groundhog” from Little Fox-Kids Stories and Songs, kids learn about groundhogs in question/answer interview format. If you plan to have your students write about groundhogs, consider using the information in this video to build an anchor chart.
This Curious George video includes clips from an episode in which George’s community celebrates their own version of Groundhog Day (called Whistlepig Wednesday). If you have access to Hulu, you can find the full episode there. It’s season 3, episode 6.
Science Videos for Groundhog Day: Shadows
Groundhog Day is a perfect opportunity to teach students about light and shadows in an authentic way that allows them to make lasting connections. Here are some great videos to supplement your lessons and encourage your kids to notice and think about shadows in the world around them!
From Peekaboo Kidz, this episode of the Dr. Binocs Show teaches viewers about shadows and how they are formed. At just under three minutes, this quick video serves as a nice introduction to basic shadow concepts.
From Kids Academy, “Light and Shadows for Kids” offers a 5-minute shadow lesson. Using a combination of animation and video, this video introduces the terms “transparent,” “translucent,” and “opaque,” along with other shadow concepts.
From Hey! Guess What, this video answers the question “How are shadows made?” The human and puppet narrators give many photo examples of shadows. This video is a good way to inspire students to explore shadows in their environment.
This two-minute animated video from Sesame Studios demonstrates and explains how to make shadow puppets.
This episode of Reading Rainbow, just under 9 minutes, features shadow facts, shadow puppets, sundials, and a read-aloud of Robert Louis Stevenson’s poem “My Shadow.”
Groundhog Day Read-Aloud Videos
If you haven’t had a chance to collect Groundhog Day picture books for your classroom library, these read-aloud videos can help in a pinch! Each of these Groundhog Day videos shares a holiday read-aloud that you can use to support your literacy lessons.
From Read Aloud with Mr. Paul, children can listen to the easy-reader picture book Groundhog Day by Betsy Lewin. Mr. Paul pauses throughout his reading to highlight details and model comprehension strategies. This short picture book introduces the basic concept of Groundhog Day. If you’d like to add this picture book to your classroom library, you can find it on Amazon at this link.
This Nonfiction read-aloud from STEMHAX is of the book What Makes a Shadow? This book doesn’t mention Groundhog Day, but it is a nice addition to your shadow-related lessons. If you’d like to add this picture book to your classroom library, you can find it on Amazon at this link.
Another one that isn’t about Groundhog day, this video from Exploratoreum includes a read-aloud of Moonbear’s Shadow by Frank Asch. This video also includes a shadow lesson with hands-on ideas that will inspire your little scientists as well as two shadow poems. If you’d like to add this picture book to your classroom library, you can find it on Amazon at this link.
Back to Groundhog Day! From CozyTimeTales! This video is a read-aloud of Grumpy Groundhog by Maureen Wright. This is a fun, rhyming story about a groundhog who would rather stay in bed on Groundhog Day and a community that comes together to coax him out. If you’d like to add this picture book to your class library, you can find it on Amazon at this link.
Read by Reading in a Virtual World, The Night Before Groundhog Day by Natasha Wing (part of the extensive “Night Before” series) uses rhyming text and illustrations to tell all about Groundhog Day. If you’d like to add this picture book to your class library, you can find it on Amazon at this link.
Groundhog Day Videos with Arts and Crafts
Have some fun with a Groundhog Day directed drawing or craft project!
Art for Kids Hub is a great spot for directed drawing videos. In this one, students can follow along to draw a cartoon groundhog.
Here’s one more groundhog directed drawing from Art for Kids Hub. This one is wearing a top hat and is a bit more complicated.
From One Little Project, this very short video shows how to create a neat groundhog shadow picture using a printed picture of a groundhog, dark paper, and light-colored chalk. Even if you don’t plan on doing this craft with your class, videos like this can inspire creativity in an art center!
Another simple groundhog craft is this paper bag puppet from Craft Club for Kids. THis is another video that can spark ideas for kids to create their own puppets in the art center.
I love that this idea, also from Craft Club for Kids, uses heart cutouts. Perfect for a February craft!
Groundhog Day Videos: Music and Brain Breaks
This last section is full of groundhog day songs. Use these during transitions, as literacy connections (with rhyming and language), or to get your kiddos up and moving during brean breaks! FYI, the last song in this section is great for quiet time. 😴
This sweet video from Mrs. Palhidai [Jenichen] features a “Little Groundhog” song. I love that she models the motions and has her lyrics chart hanging for the children to see.
“I’m A Little Groundhog” is a fun little song presented here by The Kiboomers. The lyrics are in te description—helpful if you’d like to write them on chart paper to use in a shared reading activity.
Here’s another short one by The Kiboomers. A piggyback song using the tune of “Baa Baa Black Sheep,” this video also includes the lyrics in the description for easy access.
Here’s Jack Hartmann with a fast-paced Groundhog Day song. Informative and invigorating, this will energize your students!
From Plank Road Publishing this music video tells a story of a groundhog attempting to outrun his shadow (I think?). It’s another fast-paced song—great for a quick music and movement break.
From Fusion Muse, this song, “The Groundhog Prophecy” is a fun, original song that tells about Groundhog Day in a catchy way.
Coach Corey Martin videos are great for movement breaks. This one, “Groundhog Day Freeze Dance” will help your students get their wiggles out.
Sisbro and The Happiest Animal Show! is responsible for this adorable song, “The Groundhog Song from First Snow in the Woods.” The catchy tune is paired with videos of real animals. This one might get stuck in your head!
This final song is slow and peaceful, perfect for calming down after recess or before dismissal. From K5 Hidden Peak Education, this “Groundhog Day Choir Song” is soothing (and almost three minutes long). The video is not the highlight here (as it is simply the lyrics superimposed over a still photo of a groundhog), so this one offers students a chance to close their eyes and just listen.
I hope these Groundhog Day videos help you plan an enriching and fun holiday for your class! Let me know in the comments if I missed one of your favorites!
