These Candy Corn CVC Puzzles provide an easy way for students to practice segmenting and blending consonant-vowel-consonant words independently. Perfect for a literacy center, these puzzles can be differentiated and include recording sheets and answer cards for students to check their work. This center is a fun and sweet way to celebrate Halloween while still keeping up with the standards!

Each puzzle has a color-coded border to aid in organization and clean-up. When preparing these puzzles for student use, be sure to cut on the outer edge of the border. These puzzles can be stored in baggies or envelopes labeled by set. Some students may need to complete only one set at a time. Others may be ready to work with one or more sets mixed together.

What does this Caterpillar CVC Puzzles set include?

When you download this file, you’ll find eight CVC word puzzles for each of the five short vowels. This set also includes picture strips for self-checking (optional), recording sheets, and a real/nonsense word sorting page.

Here’s a breakdown of the puzzles:

🔵 Short A: Blue – This set includes eight puzzles with picture clues, a recording sheet, & answer strip

🟢 Short E: Green – This set includes eight puzzles with picture clues, a recording sheet, & answer strip

🔴 Short I: Red – This set includes eight puzzles with picture clues, a recording sheet, & answer strip

🟤 Short O: Brown – This set includes eight puzzles with picture clues, a recording sheet, & answer strip

🟣 Short U: Purple – This set includes eight puzzles with picture clues, a recording sheet, & answer strip

🟠 Mixed Practice: Orange – This set includes all of the words in the above set plus several additional words but has no picture clues. This set is for students to build their own words. They can record their words on a general recording sheet or a real/nonsense word sorting sheet.

Some teachers may wish to teach their students to check their own work using the answer strips. These can also be helpful for emergent readers to use as a model.

How can I use these Candy Corn CVC Puzzles in my classroom?

Prepare these candy corn CVC puzzles by printing them on cardstock, laminating them, and cutting them apart. The puzzles can be stored in zip-top plastic bags or other small container. Print the labels, which can be taped to the storage containers with clear tape, and sort the color-coded puzzles. If you wish to have your students use the included answer strips to check their work, print and laminate those, as well.

Students can work on these puzzles independently or in small groups at a literacy center. You can also use them for guided practice during small group instruction.
