One for each letter of the alphabet, these printable books give students lots of opportunities to practice the phonics skills you’ve been working on all year. With a focus on single-syllable short-vowel words (mostly CVC), these books also include a handful of high-frequency words that many kindergartners have learned by heart. The back cover of each book displays lists of the decodable and “heart” words included in the text.

Each planning template includes images of the book pages, a brief introduction you can read to students, spaces to write notes before and during your lesson, and a sample dictation sentence. Use these pages to determine which literacy skills your students may need to review before reading.

How Can I Use This ABC Countdown Decodable Books Set?

You can use these A-Z books in the same ways you typically use decodable readers in your classroom. You may wish to introduce them to the whole group before circulating to offer support as students read. You can also use them in small groups, providing the differentiated skills review your students need. If you have parent helpers or student buddies, you might also have students work on these books with a helper.
