Description

If you’re stuck on how to best meet your school’s kindergarten homework requirements, these editable homework choice boards, which respect that young children learn best through play and hands-on experiences, may be just what you need! An alternative to paper-pencil worksheets, this set of 36 kindergarten homework menus gives families simple suggestions that help them engage with their children in ways that promote success in school. The activities on these editable homework bingo boards are designed to encourage academic learning as well as turn-taking, curiosity, physical fitness, social and verbal skills, observation, problem-solving skills, and good character.

After a day of hard work at school (which is often followed by after-school care and extracurricular activities), children deserve time to just be kids. These homework choice boards include options that fit into busy family schedules—allowing for enrichment and positive interactions without the stress traditional homework sometimes adds. In addition, the simple illustrations on these homework menus engage and involve pre-reading kindergarten students!

What’s included in this kindergarten homework choice boards set?

This homework menus set comes in a zipped folder including a PDF file as well as a partially editable PowerPoint file.

Here’s what you’ll find in this set:

✔ Parent Letter
This letter explains the purpose of the homework choice boards and helps parents understand how they will need to be involved in the included activities.

✔ 36 Choice Boards
Eight of the homework menus do not have a theme. These can be used any time of year and can be used more than once. The other choice boards have the following themes:
Back to School, Letters All Around, Apples, Fall, Pumpkins, Bats, Owls, Thanksgiving, Winter Holidays, Bears, Winter, Penguins, Valentine’s Day, Dental Health, St. Patrick’s Day, Rhyme Time, Plants, Earth Day, Butterflies, Mother’s Day/Families, Frogs, Summer, Oceans, Farms, Wild Animals, Maps, Then and Now, Community Helpers

✔ 3 Print-and-Play Sight Word Games
These editable games provide simple ways for parents to practice any given word list with their child. These can be used for high-frequency words or for phonics-based word lists you would like your students to practice reading.

✔ Homework Forms
These optional forms provide ways for students to share home experience with you at school. This set includes printable comic strip forms, a Share-A-Book form (these are great for building enthusiasm for reading at home!), and forms for sharing family experiences and interesting finds in newspapers and magazines.

Which parts of this set are editable?

The zipped file includes a PDF (not editable) and a PowerPoint file that is partially editable. Users can edit the text in each of the cells of the choice board, but not the images (which are flattened as part of the background for copyright reasons). There is also a blank board without pictures which users can customize with text and images of their own. The directions at the top of all of the choice boards are editable, as well. In addition, the word games are editable so users can type whichever words they’re working on into the cells.

How can I use these editable homework choice boards?

Choose a themed or un-themed choice board to use for the week. If you would like to edit the instructions or any of the cells, do so in PowerPoint before printing the menu (along with any additional games or forms you would like to send home). If you send home a weekly newsletter, you might want to copy that onto the back of your weekly choice board.

It’s best to get into the habit of sending these homework choice boards home on the same day of the week so families can adjust to the schedule. Teach your students what you’d like them to do with their completed choice boards and forms when they bring them back to school. If you can find the time, it’s very meaningful to interact with the students about the activities they’ve completed. ❤ This can encourage participation and foster a strong home-school connection.

What teachers are saying about these kindergarten homework menus:

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ “Easily one of the best purchases I have ever made! I use this weekly with a quick practice sheet copied on the back (mandatory by our principal). My parents have LOVED using this and it has choices, so it relieves a lot of weeknight stress. I recommend this to every kinder teacher out there! It encourages family learning in the home that supports what we are doing in the classroom. :)” –Christine R.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ “Searched high and low for the perfect, editable homework menu/choice board. Absolutely love this and how editable it is so that I can make it my own. Money well spent. Will make planning this year so much smoother. I am already several weeks ahead.” –Maxine Z.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ “I used this resource as part of our weekly homework packet. I gathered a lot of feedback from parents and students. Both alike were pleased with this resource as the main part of our weekly kindergarten homework. I also attached a page of sight word fluency, a reading log, and one math page with the focus standard for the week.” –Brooke M.
