10 Addition and Subtraction Centers:

▶ Act It Out: Counting Bears
Students use counting bears and story mats to think of and solve word problems for addition, subtraction, or both. Visual instruction cards include directions for individual or partner play.

▶ Act It Out: Circle Counters
Following the same procedure as in the above activity, students use circle counters (2-sided) and story mats to think of and solve word problems for addition, subtraction, or both. Visual instruction cards include directions for individual or partner play.

▶ Act It Out: Mini-Erasers
Like in the other “Acti It Out” activities, students think of and solve word problems for addition, subtraction, or both, this time using min-erasers and story mats. Visual instruction cards include directions for individual or partner play.

▶ Number Line Hop
Using a rabbit game piece, students hop along a number line to solve addition and/or subtraction problems. With instructions for individual or partner play, this center also includes a guide card to remind students of the difference between adding and subtracting.

▶ Ways to Make 2-10
Using two-sided counters, students explore patterns in number composition. This center includes two options of work mats along with a variety of scaffolded recording sheets.

▶ Ten Frame Puzzles
Students assemble ten-frame puzzles to explore and record the eleven ways to make ten.

▶ Making 10 With Cubes
Students use connecting cubes to explore ways to make ten. With instructions for an independent activity as well as a partner game, this center also includes differentiated recording sheets.

▶ Domino Equations
This center includes three options: a simple addition activity, a more complicated fact families activity, and a partner game that emphasizes problem solving. Printable dominoes are included.

▶ Quick Sums Card Game
This partner game is played similarly to the traditional game, “War,” but with a twist. Students race to state an addition equation with each turn of the cards. A follow-up practice page is included.

▶ Solve and Cover
This fluency-building activity has students solve addition or subtraction problems on a recording sheet. Then, they find the corresponding answer on a work mat and cover it with a counter. Students can complete this activity independently or can race with a partner.

How to Use These Centers:

To get these kindergarten addition and subtraction centers up and running, you will need to gather a few basic supplies (listed below), do some printing and laminating, and spend a little time teaching your students how to engage with the activities.

These addition and subtraction activities are flexible and should work with however you operate your math station time. Some of the activities have partner-play options. If you teach math in a small-group format, you may wish to introduce these activities in your groups.
